Lab Work
As a courtesy to our students, Student Health & Well-Being Primary Care clinics can draw blood for lab tests ordered by non-SHWB providers. However, for the safety of our students and to make sure that results are promptly transmitted to the ordering clinician, we have adopted this blood drawing policy as of February 1, 2012.
Lab Work Requested by an Outside Provider
Lab order slips from outside providers must be on that provider’s own Quest or Universal Lab slip. The requisition must be completely filled out, including:
- Name of the clinician ordering the lab work
- Contact information (address and phone/fax number)
- Quest account number
- Relevant ICD-10
- Lab tests requested
The laboratory results will be sent from the laboratory directly to the outside (ordering) clinician. SHWB will not receive a copy of any lab results.
There is no extra blood-drawing fee.
If you have been referred outside of SHWB to a specialist or facility, we recommend the lab work is done at the specialist’s office to ensure timely review and management of abnormal results.
Lab Work Requested without Official Lab Order from Outside Provider
Patients may have established care with providers in international locations with whom they are maintaining healthcare when home on academic breaks. These international care providers may not be able to provide laboratory orders as specified above. Certain medical conditions may also not be safe to manage remotely.
For the best quality, safety, and care coordination, patients requesting laboratory orders without an official order will be required to have an appointment with a physician or nurse practitioner.
The appointment will include clinical review of the condition and determination of the appropriate next steps. Based on the clinical discretion of the SHWB-PC provider, any of the following next steps may be recommended:
- SHWB-PC will assume care for the patient when clinically appropriate. If SHWB-PC assumes care, SHWB-PC clinician will manage conditions and provide evidence-informed recommendations that meet standards of care.
- SHWB-PC clinicians may recommend that the patient see a local specialist for continued workup and management of the condition. Insurance and referral specialists are available to assist with referrals placed to local specialists.
- Patients may self order labs at their own expense (insurance will not cover these) and manage condition with their provider abroad. Options for self-ordered lab tests include:
- QUEST: Questhealth.com
- LABCORP: Ondemand.labcorp.com
