She/Her/Hers

Amani Surges Martorella joined Johns Hopkins University’s Mental Health Services in 2014 and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. In her current role as the Acting Associate Director of Outreach, she organizes and oversees outreach activities, including tablings, presentations, and trainings, across Mental Health Services. As part of that role, Amani also serves as an instructor for QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) and Mental Health First Aid. In addition, Amani is the Advisor for the Homewood-based undergraduate peer listening group A Place to Talk, which has been providing support and a listening ear to the JHU undergraduate community for over 40 years. Amani continues to have a small clinical caseload and loves working with the wide variety of students and staff that are part of the JHU community.

Two things Amani enjoys about the work she does:

  • Finding creative ways to engage with students and the larger JHU community around mental health and making it okay to seek out support
  • Supporting students in finding their voice, developing them as leaders and helping them become strong advocates for themselves
