Sean Heffernan, M.D

Director of Psychiatry

Dr. Sean Heffernan [he/him] is a double board-certified psychiatrist with more than ten years of experience in the field. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and his M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. In addition to general psychiatry training, Dr. H has completed two fellowships for specialty training in psychosomatic medicine and treatment-resistant mood disorders. He maintains an Assistant Professor appointment in the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. H joined the JHU Student Health and Well-Being staff in 2022. He is also the Chief of Psychiatric Services at St. John’s College in Annapolis. Prior to focusing on student health, Dr. H owned and operated a private practice for seven years. His clinical areas of expertise include mood disorders, the mind-body connection, and working in collaborative care settings.

Outside of work, Dr. H enjoy running, hiking, and skiing with his family.
