{"id":636,"date":"2024-03-18T21:23:14","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T21:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wellbeing.jhu.edu\/MentalHealthServices\/?page_id=636"},"modified":"2025-12-05T16:10:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T16:10:18","slug":"som-medwell-checks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wellbeing.jhu.edu\/MentalHealthServices\/som-medwell-checks\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Medicine &#8211; MEDWell Checks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/myhealth.wellbeing.jhu.edu\/SSO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MedWell Checks<\/a> are an outreach program co-sponsored by the School of Medicine (SOM) and Mental Health Services (MHS) that provides every first-year medical student with the opportunity to meet with an MHS clinician for a brief conversation about mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Medical school is an exciting but challenging endeavor. Medical students have reported experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, burnout, substance use, and suicidal thoughts<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>. This is in part related to the inherently stressful nature of this learning environment; evidence also suggests that some students experience barriers, such as stigma or time limitations, while seeking mental health support.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> SOM and MHS are committed to taking a proactive approach in connecting students to opportunities for care and fostering an inclusive, understanding environment.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW108020833 BCX0\">MedWell<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRest CommentHighlightRest SCXW108020833 BCX0\">Checks<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightPipeRest SCXW108020833 BCX0\">are <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">voluntary 15<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">-minute individual meetings with a clinician; both in-person and virtual options are available. Each clinician will have screening questions and resource <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">recommendations<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\"> ready, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">but<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\"> students may use the time in whatever <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">way<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\"> is most helpful to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">them.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\"> The Checks are <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">facilitated<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\"> by Mental Health Services (MHS) <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">team <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108020833 BCX0\">members. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW108020833 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Like all services provided by MHS, MedWell Checks are private and confidential. It is important to us to specify that all MHS records are kept separate from SOM records \u2013 MHS even uses a completely different electronic medical record system. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SOM will not receive any reporting on individual usage, so no information about who participates or opts out, or any information disclosed during the check-ins, will be communicated to SOM advisors, faculty, or staff.\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One final point, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">these interactions are not considered mental health psychotherapy, assessments, or treatment<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and have no effect on any pursuit of licensure, credentialing, etc.\u202fHowever, should you and the provider agree that a direct referral to\u202fenter mental health treatment is desired and appropriate, you have the\u202foption to convert this outreach meeting into an encounter\u202fthat establishes you as a client\/patient.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First-year School of Medicine students can schedule their MedWell Check by logging into the <a href=\"http:\/\/myhealth.wellbeing.jhu.edu\/SSO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">myHealth portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Rotenstein LS,\u00a0Ramos MA,\u00a0Torre M, et al.
